Burn Morels - How to Find and Forage in Western Colorado and Across the West

Trent Blizzard, an experienced burn morel hunter, will explain how these pyrophilous fungi work and the secrets to finding them in Colorado. For the mycotourist, Trent will also discuss travelling to nearby states and making an old wildfire your next vacation destination.

Trent and Kristen Blizzard are the creators of the Modern Forager blog and the newly released GeoForager mushroom hunting maps/apps. They are also the authors of Wild Mushrooms: A Cookbook and Foraging Guide. Based in Reedsport Oregon, Trent and Kristen (along with their crazy doodles, Benzie and Lulu) chase burn morels and many other types of wild mushrooms across Oregon and North America. They lived in Colorado for 20+ years before recently relocating to the PNW. Both are certified Wild Mushroom Identification Experts (in Colorado) and Trent is the President of the North American Mycological Association.

From Frost to Fungi: The Secrets of Snowbank Mushrooms

From Frost to Fungi: The Secrets of Snowbank Mushrooms

With Dr. Amy Honan

Mycena overholstii

As the snowbanks recede after a long winter, some of the first stirring signs of life are fungi. Come explore the magical world of these emerging mushrooms, just waking up after their winter hibernations. We’ll look at the diversity of fungi that can be found along snowbanks. As an added bonus, you’ll get a first look at the mushrooms included in the Rocky Mountain Rare Fungi Challenge. Several species in the challenge are snowbank associates. Will you be the first to document one of these rare snowbank fungi in the Rocky Mountains?

Club Meeting w/Greg Sanchez

Our first meeting back from the holiday IN OUR NEW FOREVER HOME at CCS < location.

Presentation Title: Entheogenic Mycolotry and Ethnomycology of Mesoamerica

As a subfield of Ethnobotany or Ethnobiology, Ethnomycology focuses on the roles and relationships of fungi within the human experience. Our current psychedelic renaissance owes a huge debt to ancient sacred practices held by numerous indigenous groups around the world. Mesoamerican cultures in particular and their associations with sacred mushrooms from the genus Psilocybe are both fascinating as well as mysterious, and hold an essential role in the evolution of Ethnomycology and psychedelic science. This talk will focus on indigenous Mesoamerican spiritual and cultural uses of entheogenic mushrooms, many from the genus Psilocybe. Much of my emphasis will explore past research done by R. Gordon and Valentina Wasson and other pioneers in Ethnomycology. We will also examine the importance of Maria Sabina, her sacred mushroom ceremony, and Velada.

Greg Sanchez

Greg Sanchez knew nothing about mushrooms until 2004 when he wondered, “What do you do at a mushroom festival?”  After attending the Telluride Mushroom Festival that year, he found out, sparking a lasting fascination with and a deep passion for all things fungal. Greg is a high school Social Studies teacher in the Denver metro area and an active member of the Colorado Mycological Society, serving in various roles including CMS President in 2011, 2014, and 2022. Although he considers himself a generalist and amateur when it comes to mycology, his social science background brings him a special interest towards the human and cultural connections with mushrooms, mushroom people, and Ethnomycology.

Club Meeting With Dr. Czaplicki - COLD FIRE

TONIGHT! 6-8pm join in person or….zoom link:

https://zoom.us/j/95159159507?pwd=FxFeK4vdsUUfA6Fo9XiV8cUH5FUMTR.1

Zoom code: 655402

Dr. Lauren Czaplicki shares a mushroom tale of two forests: one pre-burn and one post-burn.

In the story of the pre-burn forest, local mushrooms are the characters that naturally reduce fuel loads in our forests by rotting dead & dying trees, building soils, and increasing the water holding capacity of our landscape. Dr. Czaplicki's company, Fungal Solutions, implements the ColdFire protocol in the western slope to speed up this fuel reduction. After all, mycelium can run but they can't hide. Here she'll do a show and tell about how she takes advantage of that to tackle local wood types.

In the story of the post-burn forest, mushrooms and other fungi are the characters that reduce contaminants and ready the soils for revegetation. Historically, frequent low intensity fires left a mosaic of unburned islands, safe havens where fungi can wait out the fire to pounce on disturbed soils afterwards. Now, our catastrophic-scale fires are too intense and deplete these safe havens. In collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society, CoRenewal, Point Blue, and the Universities of California & Connecticut among others, Fungal Solutions is testing different ways to bring fungi into disturbed ecosystems across the mountain west.  Here Dr. Czaplicki will share recent break throughs and best practices. In some cases, we've seen promising contaminant reduction! Come learn how you can snag a remaining spot and expand the study to our state.

Dr. Lauren Czaplicki holds a Doctorate, a Master's, and a Bachelor's with work in environmental engineering. For her dissertation work at Duke University, she coaxed native soil fungi to clean up legacy pollution from Superfund sites. Since grad school, she's been collaborating with the mycelium to solve big environmental problems including desertification, rangeland soil restoration, pollution remediation, post fire revegetation, and fire mitigation. In her downtime, she can be found singing to the boletes in the San Juans. Presenter TBD

NEW CLUB MEETING LOCATION IS The Calaway Room at the Third Street Center.

This will be live streamed video presentation starting around 6:15PM

Dr. SHIVA DEVKOTA

His talk: Mycophilic Bonds: Mountains, Mushrooms, and the Ethnomycological Thread

Shiva Devkota, a Research Scientist at Gandaki Province Academy of Science and Technology (GPAST), Nepal, earned his PhD in Ecology and Evolution from Bern University, Switzerland. As a PhD returnee to Nepal, Shiva has significantly contributed to the field of Mycology, particularly focusing on Caterpillar fungus, Wild Mushrooms and Lichens since about two decades with interesting publications. Notably, he initiated the “Digitization of mycological collections in Nepal - 2020” project, resulting in the complete digitization of 6433 herbariums (mushrooms and lichens), now accessible on the GBIF Global Portal.   Together with International Mountain Trekking, Washington DC, Shiva introduced mycotourism in Nepal, organizing successful expeditions in Everest (2022) and Annapurna (2023), with plans to revisit Everest in 2024. This mycotourism initiative has gained recognition in various national and international media outlets, including the Washington Post, The Explorers Journal, and Fungi Magazine. Apart from that Shiva has also introduced metagenomic approach to map mycorrhizal fungal networks in the Everest area being the SPUN underground explorer 2023. Shiva Devkota’s contributions extend globally, as evidenced by the naming of a new lichen species, Lobaria devkotae M.X. Yang &; Scheid., discovered in Xizang Province, China, and described in the journal PERSOONIA 2022. During the monsoon (mostly June – Sep in Nepal), Shiva passionately educates marginalized communities, citizen scientists, and enthusiasts about wild mushroom edibility, addressing the urgent issue of mushroom poisoning in Nepal.

Amy Honan Talk

A Fungal Odyssey By Amy Honan Ph.D.

Unveiling the Mysteries of Mushroom Movement Through Space and Time

Fungi employ a myriad of strategies to disperse and colonize new environments. Fungal dispersal is a crucial to life cycles, influences fungal distribution, genetic diversity, and drives adaptations to changing environmental conditions. Therefore, dispersal contributes to fungal ecological significance and success. We will explore how fungi move through and manipulate the environment to ensure their continued success.
